ZEST-(n). Keen relish; hearty enjoyment; gusto. Anything added to impart flavor, enhance
one's appreciation; liveliness, energy; animating spirit, piquancy; interest; charm.
Fall is my favorite time of year. It has been for as long as I can remember. I love the cooler
temperatures and the fragrances the outdoors bring to the senses. With the cooler temps the
urge to cook screams within me and I start getting out my recipe books, pots and pans and going for it with gusto. My husband stays out of the kitchen, knowing that is a wise thing to do
(otherwise he may have to do dishes (~.~) or some other chore) and I become totally engrossed with the production of goodies for friends and family.
This weekend my kitchen was filled with the delicious fragrances of baked apples with maple
syrup, cranberry crisps, cinnamon-nutmeg-apple cookies, relishes, pies, marmalades, and fresh bread. This is one happy, good smelling house and what is even better is the 'taste testing'. One has to be sure that everything is just right. My sugar cells were smiling the whole time.
As I was cooking I started thinking about "Thanksgiving" and of all of the many things I am so
grateful for. During the process of fixing my recipe for a pie I had to add lemon zest as an
ingredient. Lemon imparts a wonderful compliment to so many dishes. It adds bitter to the
sweet, enhancing and balancing flavors so they bring satisfaction to the palate. A little 'zest'
goes a long way to make a dish special.
Each day brings a new recipe of opportunity to us and we need to remember to add zest to its
list of ingredients. Think about it. Every day has its' own agenda. Don't you have a to-do list for your priorities? What is your response to them when you list them? What is your attitude?
Feeling bored, discouraged? Feel like you are in a rut with no change in site? How about
overwhelmed?
Then you need zest to create change, change as you want it. Is it easy to do? Yes. Is there a
magic formula? No. What it takes is initiative, willingness to have a vision, believe in it, focus and then take the action to do it. Oh, I almost forgot to add the zest.a passion for what you want and the willingness to persevere regardless of obstacles you may face. It may not seem easy task but there are ways to do it.
Here are some Zest Steps to take.
Zest One.Open your mind to knowledge, insight and wisdom of others. Buy books, audio
tapes, attend lectures/seminars, go to your local library and borrow magazines, books,
etc..anything that will add to your storehouse of knowledge. Pick up information on subjects
that you are interested innot just work relatedand broaden your view of life. If you have
always wanted to learn about bungee jumping in Australia, go for it.
Zest Two.Join groups, organizations that have similar interests. A friend of ours wanted
to learn how to speak more effectively, so he joined Toastmasters and made a number of new friends, develop new speaking skills and had fun in the process. Another person I know wanted to help the elderly so she joined a volunteer group and ended up getting an excellent job, with terrific benefits all because she expanded her boundaries.
Zest Three.Do something different. Try to make a point of trying different restaurants, a
new recipe, visit a place you've never been before, maybe take a different route to work. If you
develop a habit of trying new things, meeting new people, exploring new options, an excitement, a curiosity will make each day more interesting.
Zest Four.Believe in yourself and your dream. I cannot emphasize this enough. There
have been so many experiences in my life where I have been told my dreams were stupid, not
practical and no one would be interested in them. Don't listen. Listen to your inner self and
know that you wouldn't be capable of the dream if you didn't have the potential to achieve it. Your journey of experience is the test as to the strength of your belief. You may find your journey leads you to a whole new experience and change that would never evolve if you didn't go for it.
This month, as you are preparing for the festivities of the season don't forget to give the gift of
'zest' to yourself. It will flavor your life in a most tasteful way and add richness to everything
around you. Have a magnificent life, you deserve it.

A Texas rancher is vacationing during Thanksgiving in Australia. He meets a farmer, who
shows off his wheat field.
We've got wheat fields twice a big back home," boasts the Texan.
They keep walking, and the Aussie shows off his herd of cattle.
"Oh, we have Longhorns that are twice as big," says the braggart.
A little while later, the Texan spots two kangaroos hopping across a field. "What are those?" he asks.
Says the Aussie, "Aitcha got grasshoppers in Texas?"

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories About Real People
History is filled with stories about ordinary people who do extraordinary things. Frequently they
are forgotten until someone rediscovers them, like Thomas Fleming in New York. Who did he
discover? Read on and you'll see how one person made a difference in the 1840's and
continues to touch people's lives today.
Have you ever heard or sung the song "Over the River and Through the Woods"? It has been a
most popular tune through the years.
Over the river, and through the wood When grandmother sees us come,
She will say, "Oh dear, the children are here, Bring a pie for every one.
Over the river, and through the wood Now grandmother's cap I spy!
Is the pudding done? Hurra for the pumpkin pie!
The composer of that catchy tune was Lydia Maria Child, born in Medford, Massachusetts in
1802. She was the youngest of seven children and her dad was a baker by trade.
Thanksgiving was a most special holiday in the Child's home. Her mother would set out an
abundance of pies and puddings for the poor on Thanksgiving Eve, inviting them to come in to
enjoy the warmth, fellowship and good food they had to offer. The family always felt very grateful for their abundance and was happy to share it with those around them. This environment had an impact on Lydia's thinking and her passion for writing and life overall.
Her first novel, historical, was written at age 22. Well received she went on to write a second
novel and also started the first children's magazine, Juvenile Miscellany.
In 1828 she married David Lee Child. David became very involved with William Lloyd Garrison, working hard to denounce slavery. He became a part of the Garrison's New England Anti-Slavery Society. This had a tremendous impact on Lydia and within a short period of time she became a staunch supporter of the movement.
Her writing turned towards the abolition of slavery. As a result her book sales failed and she
realized that she had a challenge in front of her but she said, "I am aware of the unpopularity of
the task I have undertaken, but though I expect ridicule and censure, it is not in my nature to fear them."
Three years of living on the edge of poverty created new opportunities for Lydia's writing
talents. She took a job of editor for the 'National Anti-Slavery Standard' and to supplement her
salary wrote short stories and magazine articles. It was during this time that she wrote "The
New-England Boy's Song about Thanksgiving Day.
Lydia wrote about the wonderful memories they had as a family. This delightful song was set
to music and children all over the country were singing it. An interesting fact is that pumpkin pie became known through her song. Up until then pumpkin pie was a regional delicacy unknown to other areas of the country until her song was heard.
Lydia went on to write many articles about the abolition of slavery. One correspondence to the
wife of a Virginia senator was published and sold over 300,000 copies. She helped an
ex-slave-Harriet Jacobs, publish memoirs and even edited an anthology of prominent
African-American writers. Every year her song was sung and the concept of having a national day to celebrate Thanksgiving was taking hold.
In 1863, after the horrible losses of life with the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln issued a
proclamation calling for a national holiday "To set apart and observe the last Thursday of
November as a day of thanksgiving to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens."
Lydia Maria Child died in 1880. She left a legacy both in writing and in song. Most of her
writing isn't remembered, but today her song is still sung by children and adults on Thanksgiving Day in churches throughout the land.
