DONNA SEEBO'S NEWSLETTER ~ November 6, 2000
APPRECIATING YOUR GIFTS ©

As I am preparing this newsletter, my ears hear the 'clicking' sounds of our home's heater. It is turning on with a consistency that always occurs with the approaching chill of winter. It is dark outside during these early hours of morning and very quiet. Yup! Fall is letting go of her grip and the cold, brisk winds of Ol' Man Winter are huffing and puffing their way through the Northwest. Banging on our windows and shaking the shingles on our roofs, they say "Get ready, here I come! Be Prepared!"

We have an old oak tree in our backyard that is not giving up it's leaves easily. 20 years ago when we moved into our home this oak had been cut back severely. We wondered if it would survive. Each year it surprised us with new growth. Today it is a beautiful tree with an ever-expanding canopy.

This tree has endured not just a dramatic cut back of its size but has weathered ice storms, heavy winds and even drought. With relatively little attention from us it has grown into a beautiful display of nature's best, bringing harmony, inspiration, shade, a haven for many different fine-feathered friends and a fine freeway system for our
precocious, frisky squirrel population.

You may wonder why I am sharing this with you. Well, I think this oak tree represents Life in its own special way. Have you ever stopped to think about what makes you, as an individual, reach for changes in your life? What makes you ask questions, search for new directions, accept new challenges?

Isn't it when we get 'whacked' by stresses that life brings us? I don't know about you but I certainly don't get up in the morning saying, "Ok, I can't think of a thing to do Life, send me some difficulties so I won't be bored." It has been my observation that when Life hands you challenges they usually come in bushel basket proportions, not a silver teaspoon size, tied tightly with a fat knot of fear.

Fear is an interesting adversary. It doesn't like to unravel itself easily. No, you have to work hard to undo its tight twist. However, I have found that the best way is to cut right through it, just like a young King Arthur, with a quick, strong 'chop' of determination,
courage and action. Then the knot of fear falls apart and no longer has a grip on your mind or your actions. Sometimes you may need help to wield the sword of decisive decision, so go ahead and ask for that help. Two more hands, six or ten will give you even more strength.

This month has two very special holidays, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. This is a wonderful time to be grateful for who you are, your talents, appreciating and recognizing all of the wonderful aspects of your life that you have right now. Reflect for a little while on all of those people you will never have a chance to meet who fought for our chance to be the free country we are. Take a moment and say "Thank you."

You, just like the oak tree, are part of a powerful life-giving grid of infrastructure that is rich with opportunity and abundance. The gifts of freedom and abundance will grow in our lives if we, right now, right where we are, nurture our environment, and those we interact with. How do we do this? By giving ourselves the time and space to grow, to be the person we want to be. Strive for your dreams, be the best you can be and like the oak, recognize it will be done in your own way, in your own timing. One day you will find to your surprise that you have created a canopy of knowledge, wisdom, wealth and health that will inspire others to do the same.

May this Thanksgiving find you richly blessed with a harvest of the
things in life that make you happiest.

QUOTE FOR THE MONTH
"No pessimist ever discovered the secrets of the stars, or sailed to an
uncharted land, or opened a new doorway for the human spirit"

Helen Keller

(~.~) NOVEMBER CHUCKLES (~.~)

A 5-year-old was showing his classmate the new scale in the
bathroom. What's it for?" his kindergarten friend asked. "I don't
know," replied the child. "All I know is, when you stand on it, it
makes you very, very mad!"
J. Bothari

A city councilman in Iowa was making a speech for a community
betterment project. His closing comment, meant to inspire action,
instead got a roomful of laughs. "We must grab the bull by the
tail and look the matter squarely in the face!" he thundered.

GOLDEN NUGGETS
Real Stories About Real People

Chuck Swindoll relates a story about someone he met one Thanksgiving Day in the 'The Finishing Touch'. "With a grin and a twinkle, he whipped out his hand. It was a hand you could strike a match on, toughened by decades of rugged toil. 'You look like a man who enjoys life. What do you do for a living?' I asked. 'Me? Well, I'm a
farmer from back in the Midwest.'

"'Really?'He then told me about his plans for traveling on his own through California. 'What did you do last week?' I asked. His answer stunned me. "Last week I finished harvesting 90,000 bushels of corn,' he said with a smile.

"I then blurted out, 'Ninety thousand! How old are you, my friend?' 'I'm just a couple months shy o' ninety.' He said. He laughed as I shook my head.

"He had lived through four wars, the Great Depression, sixteen presidents, ninety Midwest winters, who knows how many personal hardships, and he was still taking life by the throat. I had to ask him the secret of his long and productive life. 'Hard work and integrity' was his quick reply. As we parted company, he looked back over his
shoulder and added, 'Don't take it easy, young feller. Stay at it!"
