"THE BEST IS NOW"
The holidays are here! What a wonderful season it is too!

We start with Halloween's 'ghosts and goblins', then progress to Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Eve. Plans are made for parties, guest lists, menus, groceries, presents and so many other things. My, oh my, it is a very busy period. Sometimes it gets too busy. We become so frantic about doing, having everything perfect. Between all of the planning, buying, cooking, various preparations and working a job we wonder if we'll get it right.

Let me share with you a Thanksgiving lesson learned when I was in my early 20's. A close friend invited me to their large Thanksgiving dinner. Because I was known for my baking skills, she requested I bring a dessert, something special for the holiday. I was thrilled. There was this wonderful holiday poundcake recipe that I knew would be just perfect for the occasion. Filled with nuts, fragrant spices and flavoring, it was sure to be a hit.

Early Thanksgiving morning I was up chopping, and mixing, preparing all of the ingredients for this special cake. Everything had to be fresh and it would take time for the cake to bake and then cool for the dinner. I paid careful attention to every detail of preparation. When it was all finished, my masterpiece was placed on my prettiest platter and the final touch of powdered sugar was sprinkled over it's top.

That afternoon, when it was time for the party, I arrived at my friend's home. My cake was put out on the dessert table. 'Oh's and Ah's' came from everyone who saw it. I was so proud of my accomplishment.

After a wonderful holiday dinner came dessert. My cake was given the place of honor. When the host cut the cake a silence developed. As he was lifting the first piece onto a plate it fell apart. In horror I watched as an 'oozy goo' slithered out of the cakes' center, sliding down over the cooked portion. Slowly but surely my masterpiece deflated in front of everyone's eyes. I could have just died right then & there. No one said a word.

Our wonderful host, quickly thinking, stuck his finger into the 'goopy' mess, sampled it saying, "Hey, this is delicious! Who wants some?" He carefully cut away the baked portion, pushing the 'goop' aside. In response to his enthusiasm, everyone said, "I'll have some."

What could have been a disaster of unfailing proportions in my young mind instead taught me a great lesson. What was that lesson? Make the best of the moment. That's right, "the best of now".
We all get 'goopy' situations in life. In striving for the best, to be the best, remember when you use the finest ingredients of faith, care, diligence and planning and your 'cake' flops; work with what does turn out and 'scoop out' what doesn't.

When flops occur, and we all have them, you'll be amazed at the gift(s) they'll bring you. You'll grow as an individual becoming stronger and more insightful.

This month make your objective to 'enjoy the now'. When you give your best and it doesn't turn out quite right, relax, know you can try again or even choose a different direction.
Thanksgiving is a holiday of remembrance and appreciation for all of us. Stop worrying about the future, it is created by what we do today. The 'Best is Now' – savor it's richness.

THANKSGIVING PRAYER

We thank Thee, Lord, for many things,
For this year's bounteous offerings:
For fertile fields and amber skies,
And brilliant hues where daylight dies.
We thank Thee, Lord, for friends who care,
In time of grief and deep despair;
For freedom that is so complete-
For all the neighbors on our street;
For courage on the rugged road,
And strength to bear the daily load.
We thank Thee, Lord, for hearth-fires bright,
When comes the darkness of the night;
For all that makes this life worth living,
And help to hallow this Thanksgiving.

GOLDEN NUGGETS
This story is submitted by Robin Walton, Leavenworth, WA.

When I first established my gallery in the Obertal Mall building in Leavenworth, I would from time to time hear what I thought was a small child crying, "Mother, Mother!" I thought it was someone somewhere in the hallway of the mall. This went on for quite some time when a friend of mine, who is a psychic that works for Portland, Oregon police department came in to the gallery one day. Her reaction was immediate – she asked me why that child was crying for its mother? We chatted about it since I knew nothing of the para-psychic. She told me to keep track of when I heard this child and any other 'happenings'. I did.

About that time the gal who owned one of the other shops in the mall and who cleaned the bathrooms and hallways went on vacation and she asked me to take her place, which I did. I would come back to the building about 8 or 9 at night and do the cleaning. This happened to be in the winter so the place was really dark except for the overhead lights in the hallway.

As I was cleaning one night I again heard this child crying "Mother, Mother!" and as I was pushing the broom down the hallway I happened to glance up into the window of the shop next to my gallery and found myself looking into the face of a young woman! She was in a poke bonnet and had some kind of shawl over her shoulders. She smiled at me and then turned and walked away into the darkness of the shop.

A few nights later I was taking the trash out through the back hallway that goes out to the alley and walked right through a man who was going from my gallery into the same shop where I had seen the lady! This man was dressed in rough clothes kind of like a cowboy would wear. Tan hat that had seen a lot of wear and had sweat marks on it, blue work shirt, suspenders, dark brown pants and heavy boots. It was sort of like we were going to collide-but he passed 'through' me like a warm breeze suddenly came up. It was a soft, gentle, warm sensation.

I never was frightened about these people-but the little girl crying really bothered me. About a month later they decided to take out the stairs that came down from the upper level of the mall to the floor level of the gallery.

To do this they had to break apart the brick wall that was holding up the stairs and lower it so they could put in a ramp that would accommodate a wheel chair. After the night that they knocked down the brick wall-I never heard or saw the child, the woman or the man again. Sometime after this I found out that the part of the mall that I was in was a livery stable, the front part was a bank and the other side was a hotel and restaurant.

Also, about this time, my husband moved his painting studio from the building with the resident ghost into the basement of the mall. He began to complain to me about a month after he moved in about noises. He said that he would just get painting and there would be noises like a dance going on upstairs over his head. He would go upstairs and the mall was empty. Other times he would hear footsteps up and down the hallway above his head from the front to the back of the mall (that hallway ended at the front door of our gallery!).

Sometimes I would work down there matting and framing for art shows and I would crank the stereo up to max and listen to classical music. It would start to echo and I would turn it off. No echo. I would turn it back on-echoes. Later on I would turn on the stereo and you could hear feet dancing on the floors. I would go upstairs-no one was there.

It makes me wonder if this was some kind of a time lapse between old Leavenworth and the present time. These people I saw and heard were costumed to the times of Leavenworth's beginnings. These buildings were all built in that time frame. Strange
