Fall winds are blowing furiously outside. Dead leaves, pine needles and rain are being
pushed about by Mother Nature. It sounds and feels like She is trying to clean her earth house
with a super powerful vacuum cleaner. With the engine running at full speed, she is scrubbing
earnestly to prepare this part of her world for winter.
When the weather is like this, it forces us inside. We have the opportunity to be quiet, to enjoy
time for reflection, to savor and pay attention to our dreams, goals, aspirations.
Every moment of every day carries within itself challenges, joys, tears, abundance, poverty,
laughter, thoughtfulness and so many other things. As individuals we live any and all of these.
Often our experiences lead us to search and explore ourselves, our dreams, our purpose.
Haveyou ever asked yourself any of these questions?
Why am I here? What is my purpose?
Why must we suffer?
Who am I"
What is most important to me?
What if_______?
With families, jobs and various responsibilities to take care of, how can we rest? Take time for
ourselves? You have got to be kidding! Sound familiar?
Living in the moment is something easier said than done. We are trained to be busy. "Busy
hands are happy hands" and "Being idle creates mischief". I understand these perceptions all
too well. We wear our "Being Busy Badge" as if it is a medal of honor. Yet if we take time to
notice, we actually do our best work when we are rested and relaxed.
Have you ever considered taking a mini vacation in your schedule of daily life to refresh and
harmonize yourself? It can be done you know. Here are a few suggestions you might want to
consider should you feel like you are frequently 'between a rock and a hard place' when it comes to having no energy during your day.
1) Power naps.these are great. Find yourself a quiet place and lay down, elevating your
feet about 4-6 inches. Give yourself 15-20 minutes to refresh yourself. Set a timer if you like.
Relax, accept this time as your own, let go of concerns, stresses and rest. You'll awaken
refreshed with renewed energy. I met a Marine many years ago who told me he used this
discipline when he was on field maneuvers and was able to stay alert because of developing the 'power nap' habit.
2) Use music with meditation. Find a location where you can be alone, turn on soft relaxing
music with soothing tones that will allow you to slip away from the hustle and bustle that
surrounds you. Then focus on that which creates joy and fulfillment for you. It could be
visualizing a beautiful place or maybe you just focus on the beauty of the music, releasing the
frustrations and stresses that sap your energy. Give yourself the opportunity to regenerate
yourself by switching your thinking patterns.
When harmony reigns within you, it ripples out touching everything and everyone you met.
More than anything else you are helping yourself. . Refresh your mind, you refresh your spirit and your body.
To maintain enthusiasm, energy for the times when we must perform with intense
resourcefulness, clear thinking and creativity, it is important to give time to ourselves. Mother
Nature is an excellent teacher and we should learn from her wisdom. There is always going to
be work to do, problems to solve and challenges to meet. Take time to refresh your mind, body
and spirit so your soul light will shine brightly, making this world an even brighter and better
place to live in.

POWER THOUGHT FOR OCTOBER
"Many people will walk in and out of your life, but
only true friends will leave footprints in your heart." Anonymous
(~.~) OCTOBER'S CHUCKLE (~.`)
"I was performing a complete physical, including the visual acuity test. I placed the patient twenty feet from the chart and bean, "Cover your right eye with your hand." He read the 20/20 line perfectly.
"Now your left."Again, a flawless read.
"Now both," I requested. There was silence. He couldn't even read the
large letter on the top line. I turned and discovered that he had done exactly what I had asked; he was standing there with both his eyes covered. I was laughing too hard to finish the
exam." Dr. Theodropolous, Worcester, MA

A Wee Bit of Halloween History
Samhain was an ancient Celtic New Year's festival. Celebrated on November 1, Samhain is the original of our Halloween, although the modern holiday also reflects the influence of medieval churchmen. Pope Gregory III, in the eighth century designated November 1 as the feast of departed Christian saints. It is as the eve of All Hallows Day, Or "Hallow's e'en," that I now observed on October 31.
It is thought that 'trick or treat' as we know it today originated from the Irish according to some researchers. There was a traditional Irish custom on Samhain eve of the soliciting of contribution in the name of Muck Olla, a shadowy, Druidic figure who, so the solicitors promised potential donors, would be sure to wreak vengeance on the ungenerous. Olla's vengeance gradually became transformed into slighted fairies and goblins.
I don't know who started the giving of treats but I think any excuse for having a party is a good excuse. Have a fabulous Halloween everyone.

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories About Real People
It is July 1952. The morning is chilly. Fog as thick as peanut butter hovers over Catalina Island
and its surrounding waters. A young woman wades into the icy sea, shivering a little but she
hardly notices the cold for she has a goal she is determined to accomplish. Quickly she starts to swim. Florence Chadwick isn't about to let a little fog interfere with her swimming the Catalina channel to the California coast.
For more than fifteen hours she swims in the numbing cold waters. The fog doesn't lift. She
can barely see the boats that are alongside, following her. Shots are fired to scare away sharks that might be in the waters. Her trainer is so concerned about her getting discouraged and not finishing the race that he constantly encourages her, telling her how close she is to reaching her objective. This day is different. She becomes discouraged. When she looks ahead all she sees is fog. Florence gives up only on-half mile from her goal.
An accomplished swimmer, she was the first woman to swim the English Channel in both
directions. When she discovered how close she had been to her goal, she says, "I'm not
excusing myself, but if I could have seen the land, I might have made it."
Two months later, Florence Chadwick goes back to the Catalina channel and sets a new
speed record, fulfilling her dream.
