A Moment with Donna - "The Legend of the White Buffalo"©
Joseph Campbell."It matters little whether a myth is based on fact or not. What matters is
whether or not the myth helps people to live better, more satisfying lives-not just for themselves
alone but as part of a community, as part of the fabric of life on this planet. In this way, if people
choose it out of their intelligence and free will, a myth that has been unreal can become real."
Since the beginning of mankind's existence there have always been legends, stories that give deep spiritual, moral purpose to life.
Recently, on my daily radio program in Tacoma, Washington, I had the delightful opportunity to interview Stephen McFadden, author of "Legend of the Rainbow Warriors". During the interview we discussed the 'Legend of the White Buffalo' and the special significance of 'Miracle', a white buffalo calf, born on August 20, 1994 in Rock River, Wisconsin.
"Long ago the seven council fires of the Lakota Sioux gathered together. Starvation was looming before them and something had to be done. Two young men were selected to search for buffalo. They left camp to look for the herd but many days passed and they were unsuccessful in their search.
Then something very powerful began to change their circumstances. While standing on a large
prairie they noticed a soft, sweet fragrance that filled the air about them. All of their senses alerted - they noticed in the distance the figure of a woman dressed in white buckskins. Surrounded by a bright light, she steadily moved towards them. As she got closer one of the scouts tried to grab her but was reduced to ashes. The other scout kneeled to honor the presence of this beautiful woman.
The woman tells the scout that he is to go back to the council and tell them that she will come into their camp within 4 days bringing a sacred bundle. True to her promise she appears to all of those there at the seven council fires. She stays four days, instructing them on how to live, to respect all of life, giving them special ceremonies to perform and speaks of the sacred value of the buffalo. Upon finishing the instruction, she gives to the Lakota people the white Buffalo Calf Pipe. (Chief Arval Looking Horse is the current caretaker of this pipe seventeen generations later.)
As she prepares to leave the camp White Buffalo Calf Woman says she will return again when she is needed in times of new beginnings. The sign will be the birth of the white buffalo calf. It will mean the coming of peace, unity and wholeness to the earth and its peoples."
There is much more detail to this legend than space allows here. I encourage you to read the
entire legend for its depth of message in Stephen's book.
Hardly a day that goes by that we don't hear the ugly word "WAR" mentioned in the media. Fear is
being promoted with an enthusiastic fervor. In my studies of history I realize that this is nothing new. Mankind, no matter what culture or part of the world he's lived in, has created this ugliness over and over again. This is time for change. A change of attitudes is in order. Fear and ignorance are our greatest enemies With the birth of 'Miracle', a white buffalo calf born in Rock River, Wisconsin; a hope and deep understanding is being nourished among the Native American people. This is the time of change, now, for all of the people of Earth to come together to create harmony and understanding of the sacredness of life and an appreciation of this planet we call home.
Each of us makes a difference. It is time to evaporate the gray, low-lying fogs of fear that clog our
minds. Clarity of thought, warmth of faith, intelligent reasoning, planning and proper actions are the best tools for keeping harmony.
Joseph Campbell's statement " a myth chosen by people of their own free will can become a
reality", applies well. Join with the legend; help it to become a reality.

"ECHO"
A son and his father were walking on the mountains. Suddenly, his son falls, hurts himself and
screams, "Aaaahhhhh!" To his surprise, he hears the voice repeating, somewhere in the mountain, "Aaaahhhhh!"
Curious, he yells, "Who are you?" He receives the answer, "Who are you?" Angered at the response, he screams, "Coward!" He receives the answer, "Coward!" He looks to his father and asks, "What's going on?"
His father smiles and says, "My son, pay attention." And then the father screams to the mountain, "I
admire you!" The voice answers, "I admire you!" Again the father screams, "You are a champion!" The voice answers, "You are a champion!"
The boy is surprised but does not understand. Then the father explains, "People call this ECHO, but really this is Life. It gives you back everything you say or do. Our life is simply a reflection of our
actions. If you want more love in the world, create more love in your heart. If you want more
competence in your team, improve your competence. This relationship applies to everything, in all
aspects of life; Life will give you back everything you give to it."

A man bid on an exotic parrot at an auction. He really wanted the parrot, so he continued to bid
higher and higher. Finally, after he bid way more than he intended, he won the bid. As he was paying for the parrot, he said to the auctioneer, "I sure hope this parrot can talk. I would hate to have paid this much for it, only to find out that he can't talk!"
The auctioneer replied, "Don't worry, he can talk. Who do you think kept bidding against you?"

GOLDEN NUGGETS ~ True stories about real people
A young boy Tom-who was partially deaf-was sent home from school with a note attached to his shirt from the officials at his school. The note suggested that the parents take their child out of school as he 'was too stupid to learn'.
he boy's mother was very upset after reading the note but decided to do something about it. "I will teach my son. He isn't too stupid to learn!" And so she did exactly what she set out to do, educate her son.
When Tom died many years later, the entire population of the United States and many other parts of the world paid him special tribute by turning off their lights for a full minute.
This 'stupid boy' turned into one of the most recognized inventors in the world. He created the beginning of the motion picture, the record player and with over a 1000 patents registered he demonstrated that a disability could be overcome and what other people think doesn't determine what you can achieve.
His mother gave him the tools of learning and Thomas Edison put them to use and changing people's lives forever by providing light to the world they lived in.
