| Fall has arrived quietly without much fanfare here in the Northwest. This morning's fog has curled its damp cloak snugly about our backyard evergreens, moistening everything with its damp cover. Silent raccoons, unseen masked intruders, can't go anywhere without leaving behind print marks of their visit during the night. In the now dark hours of early morning I find that I have the quiet needed to prepare for the busy day ahead.
A dynamic schedule greets me every day, especially since I have added an additional hour of 'The Donna Seebo Show' to my weekday routine. Booking interviews, reviewing materials, preparing for appearances, seminars and working with clients doesn't leave much extra time. However, this time of year has a way of touching one's spirit, if you allow it to, in such a way that you take time to absorb its change and relish its richness. Early hours of the day allow for no interruption, permitting opportunity for reflection, planning, meditation and relaxation.
During this time of the year, Nature begins her gradual retreat from the energetic growth of the summer months. Trees start to change color, squirrels are busy storing for winter and the geese are winging their way south for warmer temperatures. Orange pumpkins are seen everywhere, heaters are turning on as the temperatures drop and Halloween decorations are
dressing up homes with color and design in preparation for the festivities coming up at the end of the month. This is a time that demands preparation, preparation for the coming cold of winter.
Groucho Marx, a comedian, once said, "You have to be in the right place at the right time, but when it comes, you better have something on the ball." It's a very true statement and one worth remembering for ' life doesn't just happen, it happens just.'
You may wonder what I mean by that. Last week I encountered a young person who was telling me the sad details of his life. He had really had a rough time of it. Living on the streets since he was 16, he had been tossed in many different directions. Now in his middle 20's he was in circumstances that were quite unpleasant. I listened as he related his experiences. When he finished, I asked him a question. "If you could choose the type of life you would like to have, what would it be like?"
Naturally, the first thing stated was he would want to be very rich, live in a fine house, with a beautiful sports car and travel around the world. That wasn't surprising to me. However, I then asked, "What are you willing to do to bring these desires into your life?" He looked at me
totally perplexed. "That's a strange question!" he said, "I didn't choose to have this type of life! I had parents that were really screwed up and they messed up my opportunities. There is no place for me to go to and.......".
Well....he went on and on with reasons why his life just didn't work. Again I listened. Finally I said, "Until you come into a place of understanding that you are responsible for exactly where you are and are willing to make the necessary changes you'll not ever achieve your desires. There are plenty of people and opportunities available to help you. You can finish your education and work to improve yourself. However, no one is going to do it for you. There are no shortcuts." This wasn't what he wanted to hear. He wanted to win the lottery or have some magical happening where there would be a benefactor that would make everything perfect. This may happen in fairy tales and Hollywood movies however, real life is much different.
Expectation, preparation, hard work, consistency and follow through are the real magic.
Needless to say, this young person was very disappointed with my 'wisdom' and left feeling a bit let down from our conversation. I like to think that perhaps some seeds were planted in his young mind that would sprout and grow into positive action one day but I may never know.
If you have a desire, a dream that you would like to have become a reality in your life, start today with the acceptance of it being real. Then go about the business of preparing for it to happen in your life. Do whatever it takes to improve you mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually - to be ready for the moment when it does.
When opportunity does meet you - one on one - embrace it with enthusiasm, joy and unlimited energy. Your hard work and earnest effort will reward you well, spurring you on to even more challenges. You'll surpass your own expectations in unexpected hours.

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories About Real People
"If you want to figure out your path in life, you can't have an end date on the exploration," says John Wood, former marketing executive at software giant Microsoft. And he should know: Before stock options could become the only option in his life, Wood left behind this lucrative career in search of...well, something more.
He took time off to think about his next step, which included a backpacking trip through Asia. And here, a chance encounter with a teacher in a rural Nepalese village became the catalyst for Wood's future. He had the opportunity to tour this teacher's school. Wood was surprised to learn that their library contained only 30 books-most of which had been donated by travelers passing through the area. The books were locked in a cabinet and never used for fear they might get damaged! Wood believed that if the school just had access to more books, these children could begin really learning from them and set their futures in motion.
So when Wood later reached a location that offered Internet access, he e-mailed an appeal back home. It took about a month but family, friends, and colleagues donated 3,000 books and shipped them to Nepal. And that was just the beginning. In 2000, Wood founded the nonprofit organization Room to Read. By building schools and libraries, Wood and his agency plan to bring literacy to 10 million children in rural Asia by 2010. Recently the organization
celebrated the opening of its 1,000th library. "We're staying completely focused on the next 1,000, then the next, then the next," says Wood.
