THE DONNA SEEBO NEWSLETTER ~ September 10, 2003

A Moment with Donna.."The Four Kits" ©

Life has a way of giving unexpected gifts in unanticipated moments. Such was
the case last week. My husband happened to look out of our kitchen window and
noticed a small critter moving up one of our trees in the back yard. He called it to
my attention and I quickly joined him to see what was going on. What evolved
proved to be a great ? hour of entertainment we hadn't expected so early in the
morning.

Climbing up a fir tree was a young kit, (a baby racoon). A little while later we
noticed another one.then anotherand another. Four kits were out exploring
and we had a front row seat to their adventurous excursion.
The first kit I named 'Spunky', the second – 'Ernest', the third – 'Sluggo', and the
fourth – 'Pokey'.

Spunky was the leader. Without hesitation he climbed alternating boughs to the
very top tip of our fir tree. My husband was concerned that the little guy might fall but
the branches didn't even bend under his weight. We watched in amazement at his
dexterity, balance and confidence. He carefully evaluated his situation and very
quickly noticed a thin branch belonging to an adjacent Madrona tree. With a
calculated stretch he reached up, grasped the very edge of the branch, carefully
pulled himself up with his tiny paws and within just moments he was walking
along on top of delicate limb that now extended his highway in the trees. We
cheered his success.

Ernest observed Spunky's action and followed slowly but surely. When he got to
the top, he was so very cautious. We didn't think he would actually make it,
however, he was determined just slower than Spunky. Within minutes he had
achieved what Spunky had done but Ernest seemed anxious. We discovered why.

Sluggo and Pokey had only gone halfway up the fir tree. Sluggo moved up a bit
more but stopped when Pokey seemed to lose interest. This seemed to bother
Ernest and he paced the Madronna branch anxious about his two buddies below.
We started chuckling to ourselves when we saw Pokey, after observing everything,
turn around and go back down to earth. Ernest followed him, losing interest in the
challenge Spunky and Ernest had gone through.

Seeing what was happening Ernest decided he wasn't going to stay on that
Madrona branch. We held our breath as we watched him retrace his steps,
lowering himself from the tip of the Madrona branch down to the tip of the fir tree.
Perfect balance, concentration and gracefulness of movement enabled him to
achieve what we didn't think was possible. Slowly and carefully he made the
transition, turned himself around and like an experienced acrobat balanced his
small body perfectly so he climbed down the tree without injury.

Spunky, though leader of the exploring foursome, didn't want to be left behind.
So he left his niche in the Madrona and retraced his steps. However, unlike
Ernest, he found the challenge of getting back on the fir tree an arduous one.
Agitated over his friends leaving him it took Spunky a lot longer to achieve what
Ernest had done. Eventually he made the climb down to the fir tree and then they
were all gone from our view.

We, as individuals, go through similar learning curves, making choices all the
way along. Sometimes we're brave and daring, sometimes cautious and other
times we'll only go so far in our exploration of life's experiences. Maybe we
choose not to do anything at all, figuring it isn't really worth the risk.

Each of us learn life's lessons in our own way. When we are willing to
understand ourselves we should then make choices that feel right. When we feel
stuck it is good to have a mentor whose lead we can follow but we have to decide
where we want to go and what we want to do on our own. Evaluation to gain
personal perspective is always valuable.

Just like the four kits, exploring the 'trees' in your life can lead to adventure and
challenges unexpected like it did for Spunky and Ernest. Should you decide to go
another route like Sluggo and Pokey, well, that's okay too. Remember the choice
is yours and the gifts of life can be experienced one way or another, even from your
kitchen window.

Enjoy your adventures and have a happy fall.

POWER THOUGHT FOR SEPTEMBER
A person should have enough education so he doesn't have to look up to anyone.
He should also have enough to be wise enough not to look down on anyone.

(~.~) SEPTEMBER'S CHUCKLE (~.`)

I had signed up to be a school volunteer and was helping a first-grader with her
homework. But it turned out I was the one in need of help. The assignment
required coloring, and I am color-blind – can't tell blue from red. As we finished
our lesson, I told the little girl, "Next week you can read to me".

Looking confused, she said, "Can't you read, either?"

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories About Real People

John Erskine was a well known writer and teacher. He once wrote that he
learned the most valuable lesson of his life when he was only fourteen years old.
It came from his piano teacher.

"How many times a week do your practice and how long do you practice each
time?" the teacher asked

John replied that he usually tried to practice once a day, generally for an hour or
more. The teacher warned, "Don't do that. When you grow up, time won't come in
long stretches. Practice in minutes, whenever you can find them – five or ten
before school, after lunch, between chores. Spread your practice throughout the
day, and music will become a part of your life."

Upon reflection John recognized the advice as a great formula against
"burnout." He also saw it as a way to live a complete life as a creative writer, when
he wasn't teaching. He wrote the major parts of his famous work, "Helen of Troy,
while commuting between his home and the university.
