A Moment with Donna - "The Two C's" ©

"It's an appropriate coincidence that the word American ends in "I Can".
Alexander Animator

What are the two 'C's'?
'Can' and 'Can't'.

Norman Vincent Peale frequently told a story about his 5th grade teacher who had a tremendous impact on his life. His name was George Reeves.

During his classes Mr. Reeves would at unexpected times suddenly yell out "Silence".
The students would immediately become quiet. He would then go to the blackboard and
print in large letters the word 'CAN'T'. Turning and facing the class he would look at them
expectantly. They knew what he wanted and they yelled out in unison, "Knock the 'T' off of
'CAN'T'!" With a sweeping gesture Mr. Reeves erased the 'T' leaving the word 'CAN'
standing in clear large letters.

"Let that be a lesson to you," he would say, dusting the chalk off of his fingers. "You are
meant to grow into strong competent people believing in yourselves, in your country and in
God. You are not designed to be little weak pygmies. You are to develop into real men and
women and I'm telling you that you can make something of yourselves. To do it, never forget
this principle of successful achievement, "You can if you think you can!"

Wow, what a teacher! How fortunate Dr. Peale and the many other students were who
attended Mr. Reeves classes. Dr. Peale obviously took it to heart, as it became the
foundation of the philosophy that he shared with millions of people through his talks,
publications and radio programs.

When you interact with people on a daily basis as I do, hearing about the many problems,
challenges they face, it is amazing what a shift in thinking can do to provide creative problem
solving, change perspectives and provide awareness of better opportunities. When the shift
occurs then decisions are made, motivation is put into action, action creates movement,
change, and then results start to show themselves.

On September 11th, the first anniversary of an American tragedy will be honored. Stories
will be told of the greatness of the human spirit that took tragedy, weaving the events into an
historic tapestry that will show the tremendous courage, strength, love, faith and action that
took place on that fateful day. The memories will forever live in the minds of all Americans.
Since that day, the attitude 'I Can' turned into 'We Can'. It has been amazing and wonderful
to watch the tremendous heart and spirit of people pulling together to overcome the worst of
conditions to make something better evolve.

Whatever challenges life may be presenting you with at this time, remember'You can
handle it'. " With every challenge comes a gift", so says Richard Bach.

When you find yourself in the 'I Can't' mode of thinking – get out your mental eraser and
take off the 'T'. Know you 'can' take charge of the moment, create new possibilities and new
directions. You are greater than anything that can happen to you.

The Famous Olympic skier Picabo (pronounced Peek-a-Boo) Street is not just an athlete,
she is a nurse. She currently works at the Intensive Care Unit of a large metropolitan
hospital. She used to answer the phone as part of her duties, but is no longer permitted to
do so. It was simply too much confusion when she would answer the phone saying,
"Picabo, I.C.U."

GOLDEN NUGGETS ~ True stories about real people

We all have our moments when we want to give up on our dreams because the road gets tough. Here is a story I think you'll enjoy; a reminder that all of us face challenges and it is up to us to face them.

On New Year's Day, 1929, Georgia Tech played the University of California in the Rose Bowl. During the first half of the game, a very talented player, Roy Riegels recovered a fumble for U.C. but got disoriented and ran the wrong way. One of his own teammates tackled him just yards before he scored for Georgia Tech. When UC tried to punt, Georgia Tech blocked the kick and scored a safety, which became the winning margin.

During halftime, the UC players sat very quietly, waiting for Coach Price to let them have it. To their surprise their Coach was quiet too. Roy Riegels felt so badly about what he had done, he sat in a corner of the locker room, covered himself with a blanket and cried like a baby. Three minutes before the start of the second half, Coach Price looked at all of his players and said, "Men, the same team that played the first half will start the second."

Everyone left the room, filing out onto the field, but Roy Riegels did not budge. "Roy, didn't you hear me?" Coach Price asked.

Roy responded, "I couldn't face that crowd in the stadium to save my life." Coach Price put his hand on Roy's shoulder and said, "Roy, get up and go on back into the game, it is only half over." To this day, football buffs still talk about how amazing a player Roy Riegels was in the second half. He played with gusto and all of his heart, making the game even more memorable to all attending on that New Year's Day.
