THE DONNA SEEBO NEWSLETTER ~ September 5th , 2004

A Moment with Donna © "This Is the Moment"

Nature is a consistent teacher. She shows through example that nothing stays still. To plan, to prepare is good. However, there is the moment - the now - which must be savored and appreciated.

I'm sitting here at my work table, looking out through the office windows, taking in the view outside. Foggy mists fill vacant spaces between the old, majestic evergreens in our backyard. Fall is gently moving in, nudging all living things, reminding them to prepare for the seasons shift. While listening to melodic music of a famous composer, my mind wanders lightly through memories, plans for the day, preparation for this newsletter and whatever chooses to float through the brain. Thoughts grab my attention in split second timing.

The mind never sleeps. It knows nothing about exhaustion, doesn't care about time and space, and works 24/7 through the brain's phenomenal infrastructure and nervous system network. Amazingly, the mind, (which is totally infinite, cannot be held in the hand nor confined), can destroy, create, build through imagination and thought, what can seem to be impossible. Example, think of the refined technologies that have been developed, the advances in medicine, the mega structures that have been designed, the wonderful art and music created by talented people. It truly is inspiring.

Living the moment is a wonderful habit to develop. I don't know about you but sometimes it is so easy to get totally caught up with setting goals and planning for the future, that stopping and paying attention to what is happening now is totally lost. Special moments of magic are often
missed because our brains are so busy processing what is coming up that we don't even take a deep breath to refresh ourselves and relax. We don't take time to be present, right where we are.

Try this exercise. After reading this, stop and listen. What sounds do you hear? What physical sensations do your perceive? What smells do you smell? Just performing this simple exercise can help you develop your attentiveness in a whole new way. Your whole being becomes alive with an alertness you may have forgotten you have.

Life is a busy proposition. Adapting schedules, changing jobs, death of loved ones, sickness, changing lifestyles, and financial adjustments affect us all. There are times when our dreams, so earnestly worked for, come to pass, changing out lives forever.

Memories are made by living in the now. Enrich yourself today by savoring each wonderful moment that fills your life now. Tomorrow will take form in its own style and time. This is 'now' time....how do you choose to use it? Whatever you do, take pleasure in the fact you are the deciding factor and can make it what you will.

Power Thought for September
"The Mind is like the stomach. It's not how much you put into it that
counts, but how much it digests."

(~.~) SEPTEMBER'S CHUCKLE (~.~)

A father who had been finding it rather expensive keeping a popular son in high school, returned home one evening to be met at the door by this wife.

Beaming broadly, she gave him a quick kiss and then burst out, "I can't wait to tell you, dear! You know those economy lessons you've been giving Junior? Well, they're finally beginning to bear fruit! He told me today what he wants for his birthday-and it will cost only seventy-five
cents!"

"Well, well!" beamed the delighted father. "And what does he want?"

"Just one little thing," the wife responded. "He wants his own set of keys to the car!"

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories About Real People

Everyday I have the joyful experience of hearing and sharing stories about people who make a difference in life. Few of them will ever be in headlines of a major newspaper but their demonstration of commitment and giving their best is powerfully effective in its own way. This is one of those stories.

Angela Lewis always knew that she wanted to work with children. It was and still is her deepest passion. She has traveled to various places in the world, like Jamaica, the islands of Tonga, to teach those who needed to learn English, helped with training track-and-field athletes and worked with orphaned children.

She currently lives in West Virginia and is as busy as ever. Involved with her community in various activities, she works with kids and adults enthusiastically, never wavering in her commitment of excellence.

How did she develop this dynamic energy and attitude? She credits the Alice Lloyd College in Kentucky's Appalachian Mountains. The motto of the school is "Appalachia's future leaders are here, just waiting to be educated."

This school is quite special because the applicants, who come in from over 108 counties are guaranteed an education. All financial expenses are covered. The only requirement is that they are expected to return to the region and make a difference. Students work on campus, maintaining the grounds, etc. The attitude is that giving back to the Appalachian community
serves a special purpose. 80% of the alumni do exactly that.

"Giving back," says Angie Lewis, "isn't something you think about. It's just something you do."
